It was nearly a century ago that Manual Lymph Drainage, better known as MLD, was developed by the renowned Dr. Vodder.   Refined and researched, the technique was discovered to hold benefits for health and beauty and has been the modality of choice in European Clinics of Lymphology and elite spas.

What to Expect?

While the gentle strokes can be compared to a light massage, the technique  is directed at the delicate lymph vessels just below the skin. The goal of MLD is to increase lymph flow, whereas massage is focused on muscles. While both have therapeutic benefits which are equal in importance they are different in performance.  Therefor, a client or patient can expect the pain free, relaxing benefits that Vodder-style MLD has to offer.

Why is This Important?

Like Henry Ford, the inventor of the automobile, significant others embellished on the original work, and today we have many automobiles. Manual Lymph Drainage through the decades has been the same. Thoughts have been added  to the original work, relabeled and repackaged.  The MLD Institute does not teach, advocate or utilize these methods. Video footage shot inside the European Clinics of Lymphology demonstrating the original strokes of MLD bring students close up with European experts. *The greatest compliment from one of America’s leading spa director’s stated, “The MLD Institute is demonstrating the techniques I learned when I was in Europe training under Dr. Vodder’s instructor.

How Does MLD Work?

Example: I give you a brand new car. The parts are perfect and glistening. How perfect would that car run if I told you not to change the oil?  It’s not enough to have great parts. Lymph fluid’s role can be compared to the oil and is as important to our body as oil is to the car. It must go through a filtration process. Naturally, the process is done with muscle movement, breathing, healthy diet and adequate hydration. But, how many get enough to keep lymph flowing and filtering at a healthy pace? With MLD, cellular debris (a component of lymph) is eradicated as lymphangiomotoricity is activated by the gentle strokes of MLD and filtration is achieved at an accelerated pace.

What Conditions Have Been Treated With MLD?

Coming back to the car example, imagine viscous oil is not properly cleansed due to poor filtration and movement. It begins to have an effect on the surrounding parts, and the performance of the car is sluggish.  This is why for the past century, it is common to find MLD on the menu of modalities for conditions such as these. Many can be found in The Compendium of Dr. Vodder’s Manual Lymph Drainage by Renato Kasseroller, as the list continues to grow with evidence-based research.

Is MLD For You?

MLD offers benefits and relief for many conditions, it is a gentle, conservative approach with minimal side effects. As with all treatments, MLD should be discussed with your physician who will determine if Manual Lymph Drainage is the right treatment for you and contraindications to treatment.
